Their innovative solution combined EXTREN® fiberglass (FRP) structural shapes and plate with stainless steel components. The final design boasts three 60-foot-long, 6-foot-deep FRP trusses, along with 24-inch-deep girt beams and cantilevered catwalks.
Compliance and Durability
The design not only met but exceeded expectations, adhering to the International Building Code (IBC), the City of Tucson's standards, and various industry benchmarks. With these upgraded materials and supporting systems, the Marine Mesocosm is set for decades of maintenance-free operation.

From concept to completion, this project took less than 18 months. The final installation, finalized in the second quarter of 2025, marks a significant step forward in coral reef restoration research.
